Artist: Colbie Caillat
Title: Coco
Label: Universal Republic

I’m one of those people who always have music playing, no matter what I’m doing. I usually try to find something that sets the mood, meshing with whatever I’m up to. But some music stops me in my tracks, and forces me to slow down.

Coco is one of those rare albums that I cannot ignore. Even in the background of a busy day, the lyrics grab my attention and leave an emotional mark. While I typically skip through albums searching for the one song I can relate to, Colbie Caillat seems to have captured the emotional rollercoaster of life and love.

Whenever Bubbly is playing, I find myself smiling from start to finish – not only picturing, but feeling the warmth described in the song. I literally feel lighter when I hear the distinctive opening notes.

However, two short songs later I’m reminiscing as I listen to Midnight Bottle, allowing myself to dwell on the sweetest memories of an estranged love. The song is both comforting and haunting, as it captures the sadness that accompanies fading memories.

Battle is another heartfelt depiction of how hard love can be. The strain in Colbie’s voice sincerely reflects the difficulty of letting go when things are no longer as they should be.

But even with these songs of authentic heartache, the overall mood of the album is optimistic. The Little Things is a song about fighting for love, while Magic is a sensual song about love at its peak. Tied Down is a carefree song that makes me wish I was listening to Colbie play while sitting around a campfire on the beach.

Coco puts me at ease and, quite simply, makes me feel good. It’s the kind of album you want to share with a friend, and I whole-heartedly recommend that you do!
