Reviews Artist: Saul ZonanaTitle: Guinea Pigs Label: 20/20 Records I don't know much about Zonana at all. I was having trouble getting his website to load, either as a result of my crappy web provider or my crappy computer, I'm not sure which. All I know about him is that 1) he's released other CDs; 2) he is opening for Southside Johnny in October somewhere in Connecticut (and THAT would be a show worth driving to!); and 3) he is an absolute, bonafide master at writing deceptively simple power pop tunes. At just under 33 minutes, GUINEA PIGS leaves you begging for more, but that's what the replay button is for. You'll use it on this one, I guarantee. Zonana is from the Adam Schmitt / Michael Penn school of pop song composition. Nice little power chord changeups, accessible vocals, and arrangements that leave the kitchen sink out but have nice little additions here and there that are more lagniappe than overfilling gourmet desserts. And his lyrics...they don't stray into Tom Waits/Johnny Dowd territory by any means, but Zonana still has an interesting take on things. "Bette," which has been released as a single, is about an, uh, inflatable doll that is the singer's rebound punch. There are also songs about death ("I'm Not Afraid to Die," "Joel's Song") alienation ("Riled") and, ultimately, hope ("So Much Better"). Zonana is such a skilled tunesmith, however, that when his music strays into dark territory, as it so frequently does, it often gets by the listener, who is caught up in poppy guitar hooks and changeups. The relative simplicity of the arrangements, occasioned by the lineup --- guitars, bass, drums and keyboards --- often obscures what's going on lyrically. At least at first. This guy is deep. And occasionally scary. Add Zonana's current obscurity to the long list of symptoms of what is wrong with the music industry. Any one of the 10 tracks on GUINEA PIGS would, and should, be all over your radio in a perfect world. User reviews

Saul Zonana Brings It!, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 Written by Mark Selkirk I'm old enough not to be called "jaded" very often, but if that label were to fit me, it would be with regards to Saul Zonana. This guy's music is always spot-on. He's a technically adept guitarist -played bass with Paul Stanley's post-Kiss band, and was a guitarist in the first American band to play Red Square back in the 80s, when his hair was even less manageable than it is today. So he's paid his dues. But what really impresses me about Saul is his songwriting. This guy can make the most artistically tasteful MUSIC out of the most unlikely topics! "Bette," the lead track on Guinea Pigs, is a song about an inflatable sex doll, that's covered from an unlikely perspective: "and truly Bette/ helps me get you off my mind..." Hang on a sec! This is a breakup song! The rest of the cd gets even better, with stirring lyrics and infectious grooves that set even the most unwilling hips to swaying. Saul refuses to "sell out": possessing more than ample talent to make it huge in the music industry, he has chosen the high road, playing small clubs for an audience with as high a ratio of musician to non-musician as bands like Rush or Dream Theater. Simply put, Saul Zonana BRINGS IT. If you dig music for ART'S sake, you need this album.
