Reviews Artist: Halo FriendliesTitle: Get Real Label: Tooth and Nail Records Interesting, although not terribly original, cross-section of femme indie rock and girl punk-pop, fittingly produced by the mother of its invention, the Muffs' Kim Shattuck. Nicely scrubbed vocal delivery and overlapped backing harmonies (one of the Muffs' most attentive traits, for sure) with sharp, snarly chording and snappy rhythms that's drawn from an early lineage of Go-Gos, Pandoras and pre-grrl sounds for inspiration. Those looking for a hidden agenda by this Long Beach quartet will have search hard, since the Friendlies' work is melodic and charming (due mostly to Judita Wignall's virtuous singing) - a littly boy-shy and star-crossed- but overflowing with hearty hooks and hefty dance beats. While I'm not exactly sure how much of Get Real is commercialized under Shattuck's authority, or rather the band's decision to Bangle-ize their sound, this CD has its own precious - and precision- charm.
