Artist: Jaik Miller Band
Title: Jaik Miller Band
Label: Truth Movement

If, for some reason, you’ve haphazardly stumbled across this review, you’re probably asking yourself the very same question I asked myself just a few short weeks ago.  “Who in the hell is Jaik Miller?”   Well, turns out, he’s highly regarded in the thriving New York music scene.    And, he’s pretty good.    Who knew?

From what I understand,  the good people of New York have long-awaited the release of Jaik Miller Band’s self-titled debut album.   Recorded in Stamford, Connecticut and produced by Ryan Adam’s guitarist, JP Bowersock,  the album has a noticeably authentic feel and successfully blends a variety of genres.

The album opens with Another Good Look, highlighted by an infectious riff that will almost certainly prompt its listener to bust out his best air guitar.   The album’s closer is a raw, stripped-down version of There’s a Whole World on Fire, apparently a JMB fan favorite.    Each song in between touches on a different musical style, referencing the band’s influences and exhibiting Miller’s ability as a singer/songwriter.

Orange Sunshine has hints of Jerry Garcia-like psychadelia,  while the punky Social Disease summons images of the Ramones (and by the Ramones,  I actually mean Goldfinger).

There’s no question that JMB is talented, having jammed with the likes of Robert Randolph,  AC/DC,  DJ Logic and others.   Their album, though, isn’t spectacular – which is probably why you’ve never heard of them.   It’s a decent summer listen,  perfect for driving with the windows down in your silver Chevy Malibu.   But don’t expect the album to launch JMB into the rock and roll stratosphere.
