Artist: Fanny Grace
Title: Rise and Shine
Label: Natchez Trace
Sometimes, you just wanna hear some good, old fashioned country music. And if that’s what you want, then Fanny Grace is who you want. The group’s heart, a Hispanic woman named Carmen Meija, is a good-hearted, down-home girl, and she – along with her partner John Reeves – is backed by one of the most legendary producers in Nashville – John Carter Cash, who also doubles as the only child of Johnny and June Carter Cash.

Cash gave the duo the ultimate compliment, when he provided a previously unrecorded song from his father, entitled My Cowboy’s Last Ride, which is the only song that Johnny ever wrote from a woman’s perspective. The song, which is about a premeditated suicide on the ranch, is classic Johnny Cash, equipped with both unique lyrics and a classic country backing sound.

Unfortunately for this new duo, they don’t seem to be very rounded. They might hit it big in the country music world, but country is a niche genre. If they want to have ultimate success, then they’ll need some type of appeal that will allow them to be able to cross over into the mainstream. It’s Gretchen Wilson vs. Faith Hill. Right now, they are Gretchen Wilson.

This is forty-two minutes of your average country music, which can be good or bad, depending on your perspective. The only thing that I can say is that this is a solid album for this genre, and these two have everything it takes to blow up in country music.
