Reviews Artist: Beat PharmacyTitle: Steadfast Label: Deep Space Beat Pharmacy is Brendon Moeller, a South African expatriate who is primarily self-taught. STEADFAST, Beat Pharmacy’s third proper long play release, continues Moeller’s exploration of various genres of electronica and dance music joined in a gumbo of other styles, including jazz and afro. The tracks on STEADFAST flow seamlessly, creating a kind of dreamy continuity to the project (as one might expect). My particular favorite from the disc at the moment is “Drifter,” a trance track which underpins jazzy organ and trumpet solos that slide into and out of the mix. It is over way too soon --- an unusual comment for works of this genre --- as it gives way to “Dub Rocker” the first of three dub tracks on STEADFAST (followed by “Moog Dub,” “Dub Truck,” and “Love Dub”). Beat Pharmacy has demonstrated a predilection in the past for melding psy-trance with dub and does so on STEADFAST as well, with great effect, though “Dub Rocker,” clocking in at well nigh eight minutes, seems to prattle on. Vocals on STEADFAST, while not absent, are not overused either, being used to minimal effect on “Nature’s Disco” and to some greater effect on the reggae and afro-tinged “King’s Highway,” as well as “Love Me” and “Mental Universe.” Notwithstanding the free-floating segues of the tracks, Beat Pharmacy is careful to keep things from sounding like one long single, going from reggae (“Dub Truck”) to trance (“Love Me”) to techno and afro (“Yonder”). While others in the genre have come and gone, Moeller, particularly with his Beat Pharmacy projects, has endured and carried himself above the fray by continuing to incorporate a number of influences outside of the dance genre into his tracks. The result, as demonstrated on STEADFAST, is accessible, listenable, and, perhaps most importantly for tracks of this genre, memorable. User reviews There are no user reviews for this item.
