Artist: Jon McKiel
Title: The Nature of Things
Label: Wednesday Records

Even though its one of my favorite genres, I am starting to get tired of solo alternative and indie artists. Some of my favorite musicians (like John Mayer, Jack Johnson, and Rocco Deluca) come from this style, but a lot of the lesser known artists are not anything to write home about. They combine average lyrics with average music with a decent voice to create very unoriginal and boring records. Most of these artists, like Jon McKiel, are forgettable.

McKiel, a native of Nova Scotia, Canada, debuted with a self-titled record in 2006, and it was named to The Coast’s “Top 50 Albums of 2006.” The Nature of Things is his sophomore effort, and it’s set for a February 2008 release from Wednesday Records. But judging from the lack of available info on McKiel, not many people have ever heard of him. And not many more ever will. He’s a decent listen as background music if you have some busy work or mindless stuff to do, but all in all this is not very stimulating music.

As for the songs, there is only one of note on this record. The first track, War on You, is a well written song, but most of it is all over the place as far as the music goes. McKiel is an average guitar player, and his lack of expertise really hinders a lot of the songs. He may end up being a decent writer one day, but I doubt that his performing career will ever go very far.

I just wondered where i could obtain both Jack Johnson's and John Mayer's "indie" offerings. To the best of my knowledge, John Mayer is a blues artist, with singer songwriter tendencies, and Jack Johnson, well, he's definately not indie.......perhaps the next review you do could compare the freewheelin Bob Dylan with Aqua, or maybe Cannibal Corpse to Nelly. For that matter, why review an album at all if you do not like it. Simply stick to what you know and review the newest Matchbox 20 and leave decent artist like Jon Mckiel alone. By the way, I gave the record a 10, which is more than i can say for Jack Johnson and his Banana Pancakes.

Editor's Note:  While it is a temptation to decree that from now on we will only publish happy and positive reviews, I fear we will only stay in your good graces until we say something glowing about someone you don't like... then we're right back to this again.  The writer's opinion has been duly noted, as has yours.  I hope we've found some middle ground.

Jon McKiel fans, Tuesday, 22 January 2008

Oh yes, he definitely gave an opinion on the matter, but even better would have been to backed up his work with context - namely how the artists he cited do it better instead of saying that he felt Jon was better suited to background music. How so? Show, don't tell is one of the first things they teach in journalism school. I just felt that this review didn't justify the critcism. But, that's just my opinion.

Songs such as '123 My Friends' and 'Get Caught' are concise indie-rock gems (both available for a listen at www.myspace.com/jonmckiel) that evoke a personality and sense of place recalling the aesthetic of folk singers without treading too much toward that sound. Hayden and Stephen Malkmus do this well with very distinctive singing voices that wouldn't be considered the greatest sounding.

Here are just a few fans and links to them talking about Jon McKiel, the first of which came from industry insiders in Eastern Canada who were asked who their top 10 acts from the region were in 2007. Jon finished No. 9 out of a large pool of talent. Many of these acts have been heard of and are doing great things right now. Check 'em all out.

Poor music journalism., Sunday, 20 January 2008

Written by Johnston Farrow

What a joke. Jack Johnson and John Mayer aren't even in the same genre of music of Jon McKiel. McKiel is an alternative rock artist, not a singer-songwriter who writes Top 40 Adult Contemporary songs. He may be the guy who writes a lot of the music, but his band lends a lot to the proceedings as well. Jon comes from the influences of Radiohead, Pixies, Broken Social Scene, and if you want to quote any singer-songwriter, Hayden. Not coincidentally, Jon and his band recorded the album were the first two of those acts recorded huge albums.

As a music writer for years for several well-known print publications in Canada, the first rule about reviewing discs is to know your music. If you don't know the artist, research them to gain a better understanding of the artist/act. Don't assume someone shares the same influences/genre of the people you listen to. Quoting Jack Johnson and John Mayer is a gross error in judgment, musical knowledge, and music journalism.

That's not even properly criticizing the album, which is an accomplished set of introspective alternative rock. Too bad you had to smear him by poor music writing skills. I don't give out 10 out 10 to any album unless it impacts musical history. However, I feel as though I have to give it to this album to balance out the initial review.

-- Editor's NoteSecond rule.. don't ever lose sight of the fact that the job of a music reviewer or critic si to express an opinion. As a fellow exerciser of Freedom of Speech, I'm sure you will agree that David is entitled to his opinion in the same way you are entitled to yours.

Let's not forget that jon mckiel is made up of 5 people, one of which is jon. He is not a solo artist.
If you even glanced at their myspace page you would've seen that.
