Artist: Sheila Chandra
Title: This Sentence is True (The Previous Sentence was False)
Label: Shakti Records
Ever since her sensual, ethereal voice prompted the Eastern intrigue of Monsoon's "Ever So Lonely" while she was a teen in the early '80s, Chandra's singing has focused mostly on traditional Indian themes and lucrative ventures into Enya-like ambient-pop.

"Sentence" is unlike any project the energetic singer has ever attempted. It is a series of experimental electronic recordings made during convalescence while her voice was healing. Producer/co-writer Steve Coe loops her mystical chanting and wordless drones into his edgy, electronic mesh of avant-techno and soft industrial sonics.

Although her vocal range was limited (even using narrations for some tracks), Chandra's voice provides a strong, spiritual presence to Coe's creative concepts. The music is always stretching and bending towards some cosmic delight, in a spacey sound that uses Chandra's expressive phrasing as a glimpse into the inner soul.

Some tracks blend more Indian influence than others (even treating Chandra's scat singing as a fake tabla for the percussive-oriented "Is"), while many tracks are of no known origin as Coe's blend of loopage and triggered sounds is otherworldly. Definitely, one of the most intriguing experimental works of the year.
