What’s better than watching a three-hour DVD of a bunch of old British guys talking about music? If you answered “sex,” then you are right. But that’s about the only thing that outranks this DVD. I had such a great time watching it and hearing the opinions of the various band members that I was actually sad when it ended.

Yes is the British group that basically defined progressive rock. They are known for extended length songs and showcasing the instrumental talent of the various members of the group.

If you are looking for a complete documentary, everything is here. I’ve never seen a more comprehensive piece done on a musical act. The story does, however, get a little too chronological at certain points and seems to be pieced together with some type of weird symbology in mind. There are certain points where you have vocalist Jon Anderson (the obvious leader of the band) make a statement and then you’ll immediately get a cutaway to another member saying the complete opposite remark. It’s almost comical at points, but the repetition of the same tactic does get a little boring at points.

This DVD tells the entire story. As a matter of fact, it reminds me of a lyric from a Tenacious D song: “It’s not just a list of shit we’ve done/It’s a chronicling of our rise.”

The only other complaint that I have is that there isn’t enough music throughout the DVD. I am a big fan of the band and love their music, and while I was interested in hearing the story, there is no reason that they couldn’t have added some music in there at certain points.

As far as a recommendation, it’s definitely worth adding to your collection if you have a reason (such as being a fan of the band or of the genre in general). But if you are just looking for something interesting, you might want to stay away from this. It’s interesting if you are already interested, but it won’t do much to create that actual interest.
