Artist: Smashing Pumpkins
Title: Greatest Hits
Label: Virgin America
At least the major label kiss-off allows Pumpkin honcho Billy Corgan to include a bonus disc (mockingly subtitled "Judas O") of unreleased and impossible-to-chase-down pearls along with the compulsory hits comp. So alongside the carefully plucked "Siva," the rambunctious "Bullet With Butterfly Wings," and half-conscious "Landslide," are all of the cultish, collectible gems.
Like the Zeppelinish sendup of "Lucky 13," James Iha's marvelously dumbfounded "Believe," and the lethargic, trip hop expedition of "Waiting." For all of his musical excesses and disinterest in becoming the thinking man's rocker, Corgan consistently shows a streak of taking chances ("Marquis In Spades"), eager to collaborate ("Set The Ray To Jerry" with uber-producer Flood), as well as grinding away with the big boys ("Aeroplane Flies High"). Toss in the guitar god mockery of David Essex's "Rock On," the somber electronica of "Blissed And Gone" (with Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen handling guitar chores), as well as the delicate, downhearted poetry of "Sparrow," and this extra album nearly becomes one of the Corgan's better efforts.

A hits package that doesn't reek of contractual obligation.
