Artist: Eric Terdjman
Title: Galactic Funk
Label: Independent
Galactic Funk, the album by Eric Terdjman is an attempt at something different. From the title, I gathered that he is trying to sound futuristic yet soulful. The concept of this appealed to me before I heard the music. However, once I was able to hear Galactic Funk I was disappointed. It really wasn't all that funky. The music was mostly upbeat and sometimes the arrangements were marginally interesting. Terdjman writes adequate tunes for his instruments and the beats are kind of fun. Had I just been listening to the instrumental component of the album I would have probably given it a lukewarm review. But compared to the cheesy yet sometimes danceable music, the vocals are a mess.

It's as if Terdjman laid down the music and beats first. Then in the last half hour of recording, he must have decided to write lyrics. His words lack substance so much that I wish he had just left them out. He observes, "Dreams are part of our life. Dreams are always in your eyes." and "You are my sunshine. I love you." It's as if he's trying to be cliché but not even succeeding in that. The words don't seem to match up from one line to the next. Overall, these lyrics blend together creating a sappy wannabe's mess.

To top it off, Terdjman's voice is badly distorted throughout the album. It's hard to tell if he is covering up vocal inabilities or if he just thinks it sounds cool. But it doesn't. Using a Vocoder to change ones voice can sound cool if it highlights the artist's voice or song. But in this case, Terdjman distorts his voice so much that sometimes you can't even understand what he is saying. Maybe he doesn't want people to notice his bad writing. It's more probable that he wants it to sound futuristic. However, the annoying tone of his voice gets old after just a few songs.

I hope the future of music doesn't sound like Terdjman's music. Terdjman could have done a lot with this concept but he failed to impress. I'm not sure I even agree with the "funk" label. Let’s hope that next time Eric Terdjman produces a more coherent album that‘s not so strange.
