Reviews Artist: NightwishTitle: Dark Passion Play Label: Roadrunner Records Dark Passion Play is an epic journey through music and poetry. The members’ musical talent is incredible, as well as the poetic feel of the songs. What a way to start out! The opening track The Poet And The Pendulum actually contains five separate parts, each as enthralling as the one before. Anette Olzon has a hypnotic voice, as if she came straight out of a fairytale. Dark Passion Play contains a thousand times more emotions than “Emo” itself. It isn’t about ridiculous ex’s, though. There is a beauty in the darkness of the music. The art within the layout captures this beauty on print. Nightwish made a perfect decision with their artist. I felt my ears dancing to the song Bye Bye Beautiful. I can honestly say I have never heard anything like this before. Each song has my attention, and each ending leaves me excited for the next. This is an incredible group of musicians. Nightwish deserves their very own genre of music. Why categorize something so magnificent? We just shouldn’t. Thankfully, the style in each song varies. It leaves you guessing what type of song is going to play next. An amazing group, Nightwish is going to make a lasting mark on music history. User reviews

stellar disc, heck of a 'comeback', Friday, 04 January 2008 Written by Partha Mukhopadhyay - View all my reviews - Top 10 Reviewer But the first half of this CD is absolutely incredible, from the epic Poet and the Pendulum, to the eminently singalongable Amaranth. That said, the highlight of the album has to be, "Bye Bye Beautiful." Gotta go against what Krysten said above, about it being "not about ridiculous ex's" (I know, I'm taking that out of context, but...bear with me). This song is ALL about a ridiculous ex, namely the former lead singer of Nightwish, Tarja, who got dropped from the band under bitter circumstances, and to have her backup come in and sing her heart out on, "Bye Bye Beautiful,", and to hear the male vocalist (whose name escapes me right now) pour all the bitterness and the angst of that situation into lines like, "Did you ever read what I wrote you?", that's one of the best kiss-off songs I've ever heard. But it's far from the only highlight on one heck of an album. Highly recommended for power metal and prog metal fans, as well as those looking for some good, heavy, female-fronted bands. If you're interested in the likes of Lacuna Coil and Evanesence, give Nightwish a shot, you might like what you hear.
