RETRACTION

Our report that as of April 9, 1997, the band "Stone Temple Pilots" had officially broken up was incorrect. Never trust the radio for important news like this. S. T. P. is alive and well and on tour as this is published - and I spoke to someone who attended a concert two weeks ago and they said it was great!

ROCK 'N ROLL HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

The heart of rock 'n' roll beat in Cleveland Tuesday - for the first time. And the class of 1997 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees made sure the beat was loud and strong. The list of this year's honorees reads like a 1970's pop chart: The Jackson 5, the Bee Gees, Joni Mitchell, Crosby Stills and Nash, along with Parliament-Funkadelic. The Young Rascals and Buffalo Springfield who broke onto the charts from 1966 to 1968 rounded out the class of '97.

Brian Wilson, introducing the Bee Gees, took a stab at singing the trio's hit Too Much Heaven before bringing on the kings of disco. "We are the enigma with a stigma," said Barry Gibb, the lead singer on many of the group's disco hits. " We live with it; we've suffered with it. We think we've come out of it."

Gospel singer Mahalia Jackson and bluegrass bandleader Bill Monroe were inducted posthumously as early influences. King Records founder Sydney Nathan was also enshrined.

Most of the honorees were in attendance, including Michael Jackson, although Joni Mitchell was a no show and Neil Young (an original memeber of Buffalo Springfield) wrote a letter to the Hall of Fame Foundation, saying the ceremony's spirit has been compromised by the decision to televise it.
