Reviews Artist: Various ArtistsTitle: Dane Cook's Tourgasm Label: Rhino/Ada Records This is not a comedy CD!
The Dane Cook Tourgasm CD is a sampling of modern rock bands that is sure to make music fans happy, but leave those expecting comedy a little confused. This is the most important thing to know about this project. As one of the most popular comics today, I thought Dane would have included some of his more famous or newer comedy bits on this album -- some funny comedy mixed with some of the music from Dane’s HBO series, Tourgasm.
I was disappointed, but not for long. Although it was not what I expected, the album is very good sample of 12 rock songs, alternated with VERY short snippets of dialogue from the tour. Again, the bits are not from Dane’s stand-up, they are asides or quotes, or phone calls, or things like Cook pouring water all over a fellow comics taxes and saying, “This is not Taxgasm.” Funny, but not the kind of comedy I expected.
That being said, I really enjoyed the music on this album. Many of the bands are actually quite good. The buzz is that Dane Cook personally selected these bands. If that’s true, then he should consider a career in the recording business, because his taste in music is awesome. In a sense, the soundtrack from Tourgasm is fitting for Cook. He was once an undiscovered performer, trying to get noticed. This soundtrack contains unsigned artists such as Truepenny, Tandemoro, and Ride the Blinds, just to name a few. But the album kicks off with the well known, Wolfmother, which brings a lot of rock Dimension, a song that really works as the theme for the show. As for more of the unsigned talent, The Jealousy Curve gives us Don't Lie Down, a track that oddly reminds me of My Chemical Romance. But one of my favorite tracks is Mateo Denali’s reggae-rock fusion What I Give. Some other standout bands include My Rich Friends, Everything You Wanted and Truepenny’s Straight To Video. Tandemoro produces a really fun, chill track called The Movers and The Shakers that has hints of Sublime throughout.
As a comedy album this would be awful. But remember, this is a music sampler of up and coming rock bands hand picked by the funny man. In that regard, it’s excellent. I just hope that Dane Cook fans aren't the only ones to pick up this album. It would be a shame if Tourgasm didn't get a wider audience for this handful of truly great tracks and bands on the Tourgasm soundtrack. So what are you waiting for? Check it out already!
