Since my firstborn's arrival coincided
with "The Waterboy's" inaugural weekend, I have not
been able to see the movie yet. This puts me in a compromising
situation, since a movie soundtrack CD is not just a bunch of
songs put together, it is actually part of the picture itself.
Still, I'm glad to inform you that this is a pretty good soundtrack.
Actually, let me change that. It's excellent.
"Waterboy" provides a nice balance
of musical tastes, covering everything from "Credence Clearwater
Revival" and their country-flavored rock, to "Candlebox"
and their modern alternative rock sound.
Almost the whole CD play list sounds like
it was taken out of a classics collection. There is "Born
In The Bayou" by "Credence Clearwater Revival,"
"Peace Frog" by "The Doors," "No One
To Run With" by the "Allman Brothers" and more.
Even "Tom Sawyer" by "Rush" made it to the
list. Outstanding. The "Doors" number came in as a
surprise. I am a heavy fan and this is the first time I heard
"Peace Frog."
"Doin' My Thang," performed by
"Lifelong" (featuring "Incident") has a sample
of "Best of My Love" and builds a cool rap number on
it. The urban side of the soundtrack is complemented by "Let's
Groove," by none other than "Earth, Wind and Fire."
Awesome stuff.
I would have given this soundtrack five
stars, but they take demerits for falling to the not-so-current-anymore
Ska fad, with "More Today Than Yesterday" by "Goldfinger."
A pretty weak piece from a genre that is nearing burnout status
on the radio. Well, it could have been worse, at least they didn't
try to add a swing number to it too!
Still, this is a great CD. You get seven
classic numbers out of thirteen tracks, and, except for the Ska
number, the new stuff is also pretty good. Pedro says check it
out. |
