One of those bands whose name precedes
their music, "Guided By Voices" is a veteran of the
Indie Rock structure. Having logged numerous miles along a fifteen
year plus journey, they approach the new millennium with what
appears to be their most mature effort in "Do The Collapse."
Catchy big time power-pop and wistful ballads blend freely throughout
the sixteen relatively quick tracks, characterizing an album
neither short on luster or gifted for the eclectic. The album
boasts several off-center song titles: "Zoo Pie," "Optical
Hopscotch," "Much Better Mr. Buckles" and "Strumpet
Eye." "Guided By Voices?" One can only wonder.
Multi-talented Robert Pollard, singer/songwriter,
former school teacher and collegiate football star, leads the
way on their latest showing. All in all, it's impressive in an
addictively foot-tapping sort of way that captures elements of
fuzz-rock's latest commercial stars and the likes of vintage
Talking Heads and Cheap Trick on this Ric Ocasek produced offering. |
