At around the time of this writing, their
second single "Slide" should be quickly rising up the
charts, following their previous smash, "Iris," featured
on the motion picture soundtrack "City of Angels,"
as well as their latest "Dizzy Up the Girl." It's almost
hard to imagine this is a band that's had their nose to the grindstone
for a good ten years, when it would be easy to assume their careers
only started with their breakthrough release "A Boy Named
Goo" in '95. In a sense it did, for that album, which skyrocketed
this otherwise obscure but talented trio from Buffalo, N.Y.,
was their ticket to stardom and the defining moment in a career
on the upswing. "Dizzy Up the Girl" finds the "Goo
Goo Dolls" back in the maturity stage that began from there,
and building steadily on the hard-edged pop direction they've
successfully refined over the years. Without being monotonous
or intentionally conscious of their former successes, the 'Dolls
build to climax from a long list of progression, to produce withering
soundscapes on "Dizzy," "Slide" and "January
Friend," which lends a nod to the past, as well as the established
hits. Following on the emotionally strung "Iris," "Extra
Pale" and "Hate This Place" round things out leaving
the listener lying and helpless on the cutting edge floor. |
