If Evans' warm and embracing
baritone sounds familiar, you obviously have some Ry Cooder
discs in your collection. Evans' touchstone voice bore the sum
and substance of Cooder's far-ranging musical interests during
most of the ‘70s and ‘80s, yet, always rooted itself in the
primary colors of blues, gospel and soul.
However far “beyond” Cooder drifted
edgeward and outward in his soundtrack work, Evans' traditional,
proficient voice pulled him back down to earth. Evan's latest
disc is an unparalleled listen, a delightful blues-oriented
session that leaps skyward when the boogies blast forth
("Don't Let The Green Grass Fool You) and crawls
mercilessly on bended knee when elusive love seems within its
grasp ("I Want To Love You").
Released on the audiophile AudioQuest
label, the production clarity is astonishingly crisp and snappy,
placing the listener into Evans' inner circle while he magically
wails away. I would be surprised if this isn't one of the best
sounding blues discs in your collection. Next to Cooder's own,
of course.
