You really have to marvel at
anyone who would dare to manipulate the difficult formations of
electronica’s sine waves and tonal timbres to a point so
inside, that the resulting music resembled some kind of
cybernetic symphony. John Hughes' work as Slicker is almost
scientific in approach, creating minimalist patterns by looping
various electronic-generated buzzes, bumps and clicks along with
the occasional real found sound or instrument (Christopher
Case's piano work and Takeshi Mitsuhasi's guitar act as perfect
foils). While the majority of industro-techno releases tend to
overwhelm the listener by brandishing as many beats and
orchestral blasts possible, Hughes' approach builds on hushed
nuance. A touch of brushed hi-hat there. A drawn breath looped.
Waxpaper crinkled to sound like different octaves. They are
everyday sounds, but given a fascinating (and musical) emphasis
here. Instead of just indulging
in noise textures, Hughes keeps their rhythms vivacious and
unbroken, resulting in one of the most original dance-ambient
works in memory. Groundbreaking stuff, really.
