Given such a disturbing turnover rate, my guess is that there are not many players volunteering to join this Norwegian black metal ensemble. First, there was a replacement vocalist who committed suicide. Then there was the second guitarist murdered by the new bassist. Ironically, this band seemingly lives and perishes beneath the brutality and turmoil they bellow about.

Read the classified ad carefully: Only diehards need apply. This mostly “live” album was recorded during last year's Grand Declaration of War tour, supporting the 2k disc by which most of the Scandinavian press has hailed as the genre's latest pinnacle. As one of the few doom bands to structure their work on tricky melodic content, long-drawn ideas, as well as visceral, sure-kill riffs, Mayhem are just not digging the same ditch, but descending into a much deeper musical purgatory.

Given the artillery-like percussive blasts from drummer Hellhammer, the overall sound of the concert tracks here is overly dense and purely destructive.

The real interest for true fans may be the inclusion bonus of Declaration's pre-production tracks that are worthy of a release on their own.
