It is a truly rare thing when
an album comes across this reviewer's desk and you already know
it gets 5 stars before you ever open the case.
I have been a gigantic fan of Lyle Lovett
since his initial release(and I even am friends with some folks
who went on tour with him who play with me too.. la de
bleeping dah as they say.) Many of that disc's,
"Cowboy Man," and his other two initial releases,
"Pontiac" and LL and his Large Band," best songs
are complied on this nifty disc. Back when Steve Earle and Lyle
Lovett evidently gave a REASON to have to invent the designation
known as alt.country when country radio itself decided, to quote
Barbara Mandrell .. that country wasn't cool.. Lyle's first
singles "Cowboy Man" and the witty, enthralling
"God Will" showed us a major talent had indeed
emerged. And continues to do so.. as much as I am eagerly
awaiting the rest of the volumes of this Anthology, I revel in
hearing all of this early Lyle on one disc. Not only is this CD
a thrill for us longtime Lyle Lovers (say that three times
fast), but if you have always wondered what the hubbub was about
concerning the shock- haired boy from Klein or are a late, post
"Joshua Judges Ruth" convert.. this album is exactly
what you need to see where it all began.
So many gems here... the thrilling Emmylou
Harris-assisted wailing glory
of "Walk Through The Bottomland,"...the
pure country rodeo story of "Farther Down the Line,"
... the aching, yet optimistic pain of "If I Were The Man
You Wanted," and the peppy swing of "L. A.
County."
There are even two new cuts
exemplifying LL's talent; a swingy cute story about a truck in
appropriately, "The Truck Song" and more Texas hootin'
in "San Antonio Girl."
Whether you are a new, recent, or long
time fan of Lyle.. You need this disc .... Hell, if you just are
someone who likes good, no GREAT music you need it. So as soon
as you get done reading this, go buy it! Don't just sit there
admiring my wordplay! Buy this now and join me in eagerly
awaiting the future volumes of what promises to be one of THE
bodies of work of this first decade of the new century.
