Hunter is coming from a
completely different reference point in connection with the
blues. While the genre has become a players' field of late
(especially with the recent
tally of pubescent lead guitarists), this British
singer/guitarist (a now and then member of Van Morrison's
touring band) harkens back to the vast treasury of '50s and '60s
r'&'b vocalists that ruled its inception. With Hunter's
smooth inflections and passionate delivery emulating nothing
less than the classic cool of Sam Cooke and Brooke Benton, Kick
It Around is a spectacular listen and a re-introduction to the
blues' soulful roots. Leading off with the subtle shuffle of the
title track and the gospel-tinged doo-wop of "Because
You're Mine," it's not hard to hear the soul and passion of
an era gone by. And when Hunter steps up to the mic to deliver
Benton's "Lover Question," you'll be rootin' around to
find the owner's manual. It's that startling. And while Hunter
is also a formidable guitarist
(after all, you don’t think Morrison actually lets this man
steal the show), his voice is a riveting work of beauty. Dig it.
