You know this is really,
really serious. Not only is our piano man credited as “William
Joel, composer” here, but this venture is also released on
Sony’s staid Classical imprint. Velvet Underground fans may
recall that’s how Lou Reed wanted his noise opus, Metal
Machine Music, to be
issued on RCA’s classical division. The joke you’re supposed
to insert here has something to do with which of these works
being more unlistenable. Okay, so I don’t have the chops to
barge into Joel’s mid-life crisis here. Even if Fantasies does
sound warm, romantic and impressionistic like those Debussy
scores I once studied in freshman music appreciation class. It’s
not my usual brand, and agreeably, it’s way over my head. But
whatever pretense here, I do have to credit him for not issuing
some kind of “orchestral hits” blather that would encourage
the John Tesh crowd to pee purple. Note to astute ‘n’ early
Christmas shoppers: you could do a lot worse with your Aunt Rose’s
gift.
