vol 4, num 11

The entire last 3 /4 of this amazing album of a dozen tunes could have sucked royally and it would still would deserve five stars. With Trisha's soaring power fueling the current hit "I Would've Loved you Anyway" shifting gears to caress the infectious grooves of "Love Alone" and "For a While," these three cuts beat the hell out of some artists' ENTIRE career output. But the rest doesn't suck. FAR FAR FAR FAR from it.

Her dead-carbon copy of "Seven Year Ache" with singer-of- the-original-smash hit Roseanne Cash may inspire some wags to criticize how they don't really do anything new with the material. Methinks if it ain't broke, don't fix it -- this is a marvelous redo of the song that launched Johnny's little girl's career.

The next two songs shook me so deeply.. I nearly had to quit listening. If  you are a member of the walking, bitter romantic wounded.. AND you perhaps take that out on people not directly the cause of your state.. then check these two songs' lyrics out. -- From "I Don't Paint Myself Into Corners" -- I kicked down all the walls and threw my brushes away/the tools... that chained your memory to me/ are out the door/ ( then title of song) -- From "Harmless Heart"  -- You're the best at self-defense/But mine was a harmless heart.. If you think even READING those lyrics gets to you.. try hearing the gorgeous songs they are contained in. I barely could get through the rest of this unbelievably wrenching album.

The other shattering "highlight" includes a gorgeous song entitled "Melancholy Blue" Co-penned by songwriting legend Harlan Howard, who also wrote "I Fall To Pieces", another song Trisha has done an outstanding job on. If these lyrics.. especially in light of recent world heartbreak and horror don't cause a lump in your throat .. then perhaps you have ice water instead of blood : a suprisingly kicky fun beginning that seems like a normal lost-love song begins "If It was just Money/Baby, I could make it/ But living without you / I can't take it."..... just a peppy fun song right .. until the end.. " Whenever I feel brave/ I lay some flowers on your grave" ... for such a stunning album after all of that I thought I was going to have to go back to therapy.

The only missteps are the title cut . which is just too poppy, too funky.. too WEIRD and the cut " Love me Or Leave Me Alone" which can't seem to decide if it's rock , jazz, big band, funk or what have you.. but in my ears saves itself with a soaring Jim Steineman-like chorus that, Meat Loaf worshipper that I am, sucks me in completely. A tortuous, glorious album. Phenomenal material in Trisha's otherworldly delivery, what more do you want?
