What happens when a fresh and
talented singer meets a songwriting mover and shaker? Alanis
Morissette and Glen Ballard. Brittany Spears and Max Martin
(okay maybe SHE’s not talented). And now Kristen Sampsell and
Dan Yashiv. Lure, driven by Sampsell’s powerful, mesmerizing
vocals creates laid back tunes that seductively welcome the
listener into a state of altered consciousness. The songs on
their self-titled debut come packaged and ready for radio,
clubs, or the bedroom.
The music of Lure is a sort of
trance-like, British inspired, love music similar to things
we’ve heard from Portishead, Sarah McLachlan, and Dido.
Sampsell lays down her soft, sexy vocals down on a palette of
lush instrumentation provided by Yashiv and six other musicians.
Yashiv, who is also the album’s producer, is know for his work
with such high profile artists as Madonna, Brandy and George
Michael. Lure performs on a regular basis in the New York area
as a five-piece. Though Yashiv and Sampsell composed the 11
tracks that make up the album, the other band members add their
own unique voices into the mix. Guitar sounds resound off the
upper echelons of the heavens, and the organic upright bass
sounds prevent the disc from becoming too electronic. The
strings and Rhodes piano on "Grace" go far to create a
hot James Bond night atmosphere, full of mystery and romance.
"Bedbugs", with it’s wobbly guitar and mysterious
Film Noir bass line, screams intrigue. The music is honest and
laid back. The songs are solid and consistent from the beginning
all the way through the hidden track, but Lure still manages to
infuse a wide array of musical influences from jazz to reggae,
techno, pop, and even rock-a-billy into their tunes.
These ultra-hip New Yorkers Lure
truly deliver the goods on their first album. A pleasure to
listen to. A true a mood setter. Sampsell’s voice pulls at the
strings of the heart, daring you to fall in love despite knowing
that you’ll only be put down. "You’re gonna be my one
hit wonder," she tempts on "One Hit Wonder." It
won’t be much longer before the public’s resolve breaks and
they give in to the Lure.
