This nine track CD should really be labeled
a remix CD and not an album, considering that six of the songs
are remixes. "Love Me Sweet's" original version is
indeed very sweet, with baby-voiced vocals layered over delicate
beats and Eastern-flavored percussion. The Saint Etienne remix
of the song deepens the beat, and creates an uplifting version
with twinkling keyboards and stripping away the Eastern influences.
Jim O'Rourke, however, uses those Eastern influences to create
a psychedelic and multi-layered version of the once delicate
song. The original mix of "She's My Lover" also incorporates
subtle Eastern sounds to create a mysterious vibe. Unfortunately,
the Bang Bang remix kills the mystery with a very lackluster
reincarnation of the song.
There is no original version of "Relaxin'
With Cherry," but we are rewarded with two excellent versions
of the song, one by Gak Sato and one by Dimitri from Paris. The
former delivers the perfect blend of lilting guitars, bongos,
and eerie echoing vocals. The latter delivers what else but huge
bass and cheesy but loveable beats, mixed in with those same
lilting guitars for a footstompin' remix. |
