Hailing from East Lansing, Michigan, "Fat Amy" is just beginning to come into their own. This somewhat mellow college-music band has toured with "They Might Be Giants," "Verve Pipe" and "Fastball," as well as being featured on a "best bands of Michigan" compilation. They've picked up lots of new fans along the way, too.

The songs I liked best were, as you might expect, the ones I enjoyed most at the concert with "Fastball." Unfortunately at that time I had no idea what the names of them were. One of these stand outs is "Fortunate," a real nice mix of heavy and light tones. The tune is about a relationship on it's last legs. Very interesting lyrics that describe exactly how it feels to be stuck there. Two other singles from the album worth mentioning are "Bourbon" and "Early November." Both have a similar feel to "Fortunate" and are getting a fair amount of airplay on college stations.

"Bleed On" is a soft song with a beauty you don't hear every day. The backup singing is unusual and distorted. The effect is stunning. Similarly, "Blue Nubb" is soft, but with accoustic guitar, which is very different from the other songs on the album. Nice way to end the record, but it doesn't stop there. The hidden track, "Temptation Eyes," grabs you with it's underwater trippy background music and simplicity. The chorus speeds up and gets really rough as the drum beats frantically behind the music.

The album isn't perfect, but it's definitely worth your money if you can hunt it down. I hope "Fat Amy" does well on their tour and with their next album. They should have a wonderful career ahead of them if they can keep cranking out this quality of music.
