At the height of their popularity, there wasn’t a large
blues ensemble that could touch Roomful Of Blues’
sophisticated and fluent arrangements. Likewise, the
band’s live shows were a uncommon treat, bringing the
whole house party with ‘em, even if there were more
people on stage than in the crowd.
While the mood and
vogue has shifted towards adolescent guitar-stretchers
and their incessant jams, Roomful still carries on a
tradition of the blues review. A fast, varied
performance popularized by compeer Johnny Otis, his
shows were broken down into different styles, while he
expertly mixed in a few new things, and then concluded
with a fireworks finale.
The band’s eleventh album is
tacit tribute to Otis’ pacing, kicking things off with
the bulldozin’ “Roll Me Over,” giving out the grief
during the rollickin’ “You Give Me Nothin’ But The
Blues,” notchin’ down for the sultry title track, and
then heading for the exit with the uptown swing
of “Where’s Bubba?” Vocalist Mac Odom shifts from
gospely growl to sly seducer as the lyrics warrant,
while the band’s Stax/Volt horn lines are truly
untouchable. A very proud disc.
