Artist Nate Ashley
Title Darling I'm Your Devil
Label
Reviewer Jessica Harley
Rating
Luscious artistic bohemian moodiness drapes this meloncholy album. Nate Ashley uses layers of percussion, choral backing voices, a variety of electronic effects and instruments, and puncturing lyrics to create a tasteful gothic styling. "Darling I'm Your Devil" is an album best heard at night, in the dark, with your beloved.

Sensual and soft, his voice whispers and rolls out lyrics about love lost, fragile emotions, secret desires and loneliness. The emotive lyrics use wonderful analogies and artistic symbolism to cut to the heart.

The opening song "Blue Like My Eyes" talks of a woman who escapes into her desires in order to take away the pain. Lust driven, she degenerates and loses touch with herself. "Lonely Lover" addresses masturbation. When you "love yourself" be as gentle with yourself as your would a lover. Self-sustainment need not be unpleasant. "Close Your Eyes" is sung with an electronic filter and dreamily meditates on what love would be like if there was no space between each others lives. Due to emotional strain and misunderstandings, love is not truly experienced as it should be, but put on hold.

Since I am a woman, his sexy voice lulled me into euphoria and his lyrics played with my moods and thoughts. The deep rich sounds surround and create a sensual setting for the darker issues to be splayed out in beautiful prose. All together, this album is enchanting, but slightly dreary and slow-paced. "Darling I'm your devil" makes a wonderful album to listen to in order to go to sleep.
