Keyboardist Greg Kurstin spends most of his time playing Walter Becker to Tommy Jordan’s Donald Fagen for the delightfully pensive trip-pop produced by Geggy Tah (their “Into The Oh” is a must to own). This session finds Kurstin in the midst of a new jazz/acid jazz/fake jazz collection of grooves that rates as one of the more absorbing outrock side projects.

The cast is exceptional: Kurstin heads a crew of old dogs and new blood featuring Sean Lennon on turntables, vocalist Miho Hatori (Cibo Matto), bassist Flea (Peppers), trombonist Gabrial McNair (Goldfinger, No Doubt), saxist David Ralicke (Beck), drummer Gary Novak (Chick Corea), drummer Yuval Gabay (Soul Coughing), bassist Daniel Shulman (Run-DMC), and drummer Brian Reitzell (Air, Redd Kross).

Besides the usual loose-leaf jams, there is a sway towards ‘60s soul and funky nu-pop among the tracks here, all with a festive attitude befitting such a swank gala. I’m assured that you’re on the listening guest list.
