Rating
Surprisingly, this Sacramento foursome is one of the noisier, more assertive acts to emerge from the ex-Down By Law Bill Stevenson/Stephen Egerton/Jason Livermore production triad. Amply boosted by the trio’s punchy sound and harmonic inclinations, most of Welt’s songs (for their fourth album) actually hinge on bassist Jason Cooper’s gravely moanings. His vocal phrasing, the lyrics’ personal anguish, and the band’s abrupt chording turn the tunes a little darker and more somber than the usual give-the-crowd-want-they-want missives. The clash of the band’s hard edge with the producers’ aural sweetening must have prompted some interesting back-and- forths in the studio. As a result, the hooks are barren and the harmonies are sparing, while the energy and tension are thicker than The Undertaker‘s collar. Both producer and the group sound the better for it.
