Artist King Django
Title Reason
Label Hellcat Records
Reviewer Richard Proplesch
Rating
The strange, boundary-breaking informalization of ska here is obviously a sign of that scene's growing pains, rather than its degeneration. A dark, gothy organ flows past the bottomless dub of "I Don't Want You," as a swarm of garagey fuzzguitars clip the jumpstep of "Kick It Out.” Meanwhile, a synth and vocoder provide a digital updating for the dancehall splendor of "LKO." Toaster/trombonist Django has been crossbreeding intriguing ska subspecies since his days with Skinnerbox, adjusting the island’s traditional sounds in a new direction one step per tune. “Reason” always returns to the security of a swift-steady beat or a familiar horn line, to remind you that Django's heart remains with tradition, but with an ear aimed towards the future. One of the defining third wave contributors.
