Artist Jackie King with Willie Nelson
Title The Gypsy
Label Indigo Moon Records
Reviewer Richard Proplesch
Rating
King is a Texas-bred jazz guitarist of local renown, a left-handed, Tal Farlow-inspired fretman who uses the natural tone of his hollow-bodied Gibson to pluck off quicksilver runs and velvet-stroked chords. King's current gig with Nelson's Family Band renews a partnership from back in '84 when the pair recorded Angel Eyes, one of Willie's off-trail forays in crooning a set of jazz standards graced with King's superlative backing. The Gypsy's formula is more cosmopolitan than country, allowing King to bear most of the sophisticated musical fruit while Nelson's tumbleweed tenor rambles through takes of "The Nearness of You" and "Lover Come Back to Me." King's chops are tranquil and refreshing, while Nelson (and hopefully any fans drawn by his name) expands a few horizons mixing the oft-contrary worlds of country and jazz. Extremely rare that a disc will appeal equally to lovers of both.
