Though straight-edged and politically-versed never
usually meld together, Santa Cruz's Good Riddance have
become one or the most articulate and opinionated bands
among apolitical power punkers. Last year's Phenomenon
Of Craving was an eloquent rant that equated high-end
harmonies and hardcore velocity with empowerment and
personal liberty. It was an unusual unity of message and
clamor that caught the punk scene by surprise. Symptoms
takes that to the next level, although not without some
distractions. While Russ Rankin still insists on
delivering the goods on his own terms ("Enter The
Unapproachables," "Spit You Out"), sometimes the tunes
get caught up in their own rhetoric ("Defusing The
Popular Struggle") that sounds all the fun of a dreary
civics class in summer school. However, I'll take
his "Nobody Likes A Cynic" to heart, and mention again
that Good Riddance are one of the few bands who will
provoke you to think before you leap.
