Title So Sedated, So Secure

Rating
This DC black metal fivesome are well-versed in the Scandinavian art of destructive, duel-guitar riffage and thunderclap-coupled kickdrums like most in this punishing era. So what’s this doing on hc/emo Victory label? Apparently, a non-stop, 24-hour drive to Chicago to personally audition at company HQ impressed the rank- and-file to sign the band on site. Obviously, you may detect scant traces of aged power metal when DH slip into the few scattered instrumental passages here (their Iron Maiden tangents are some of the best). Yet, the group churns away on all the familiar hardcore settings: maximum volume onslaught, while the string guys grapple with grisly feedback overload, leaving John Henry’s vocals to warble in their own despondent death rattle. A unconventional band/label marriage to be sure, but one with a chilling potency.
