"Morbid Latenight Show" may be "Bertine's" debut album, but this isn't
her introduction to the music world. With a handful of Norwegian music
awards under her belt, it's no surprise that she put out a well-polished
debut. The album opens with "Apples And Diamonds," a sugar-synthy track
with "Bertine's" airy vocals floating along. The rest of the album has a
bit of everything: funk, house, pop, jazz, lounge. Unfortunately, by the
middle of the album, the beats become the center of the songs, and a bit
trite and repetitive. But then "Bertine" comes up with "Little Rosie," a
lovely vocal number, and is followed by "Butcher's Son," whose
orchestral arrangement beautifully complements "Bertine's" clear voice
and sounds straight out of This Mortal Coil.

The title track brings us back to dance mode, but tinkling keyboards and
vocals make it a quirky and likeable song. The last track, "In My Mind,"
with its piano and strong female vocals, makes you stop and say "Aha!"
Finally you realize that it's Tori Amos that she reminds you of. But
this is more like Tori on ecstasy and then coming down.
