The first thing I'm thinking as I'm listening
to this rather unorthodox type of music as presented by "Erik
Core," is he's gonna need plenty of extra packages of strings
standing by before all this is over.
His latest album, "Acoustic Revolution,"
(and I'm not going to repeat the record label name - I mean,
come on!) is just that, and I'm sure if anyone said anything
differently, he's got the vocal stamina to put forth a hell of
an argument.
But truthfully, what he does with only
an acoustic guitar and a head full of rage, no one's yet to hear
of before. Actually, what Core does with an acoustic guitar,
wasn't meant to be done with an acoustic guitar in the first
place, so I'll withhold saying he does it well until this spreads
further. When he's not spouting in anger, Core's not a bad singer,
and as a guitar player, he wails. You've never heard strumming
like this before - no one in their right mind would ever teach
it! Intensely played at flooring speeds, except for an odd bout
with depression, "Opiate State," Core employs a hard-core
nature to an otherwise gentle instrument. Punk-rock attitude
put to folksy music, but don't even try to envision a guy sitting
up on stage on a stool addressing the audience with a gleaming
smile and occasional nod of recognition. That can't happen here.
His music is innovative, unique, and absolutely
in poor taste, yet for all the effort he puts in to fill the
role of a complete band with one instrument, odds are acoustic-based
music is still viewed as too one-dimensional, no matter how determined
its presentation, for any sort of lasting recognition. But this
is fun to listen to. |
