Artist The Varukers
Title How Do You Sleep?
Label Go Kart Records
Reviewer Vinnie Apicella
Rating
They cut through about a minute long opening jam to the title track and all things considered, the question of sleep is immediately answered. in fact staying conscious becomes a little bit trying after a little more of this. wow, this smokes!

The Varukers have a been a staple in the U.K. Punk scene for more years than many of us either care to remember or are mentally capable of. How long has it been? No matter, they're back and they certainly haven't mellowed with age -- I'd dare say they're as brutally aggressive as they ever have been or many others could ever hope to be.

Expectedly, there is an underlying theme as dangerous as the manner in which it's delivered. "Gun Crazed Kids," the title speaks volumes. and if it isn't enough, get an earful of Rat on vocals and his "Gun crazed kids twisted fucked up gun crazed kids." as it sears through your mind a few times over... you'll understand.

Another of the blinding speed variety goes by way of the sultry and seductive "Bleed Us Dry." Well not exactly, but this one's a troop rallying statement against the corrupt and incorrigible system that's held us down for so long. The wonderful thing about Punk Rock, or maybe Street Punk and Hard-Core more specifically, is that the foundation from which it's based can get and has gotten as old as anything and yet still remain socially relevant in whatever time frame it's produced... here it's no different -- and so on the one hand, a good thing as bands like The Varukers can still have a valid purpose in life and we'll still realize we ain't in this alone.

"Where is Your God?" "As Good As It Gets," and "Under Attack," three more reasons to keep the flame burning in the name of life, liberty and independence without perfunctory principles. I'm still in awe at the sheer magnitude of this record! Having just completed a recent U.S. stint, there's talk of their return later this year to level the rest of the major cities that haven't yet been reduced to rubble
