What is the point of purchasing a CD with
most of the highest exposure music of the year? Out of 15 tracks,
the "1999 Grammy Nominees" has 11 songs that have passed
the burnout status more than a few weeks ago. If you haven't
listened to any of these at least 50 times, then maybe you are
one of the lucky few. Even if I never listen to Top 40 radio
stations, I still get nailed with most of them whenever I end
up watching VH1.
That's the bad news. The good news is that
even if these 11 songs are extremely overexposed, they cover
so much ground that almost everybody is going to find something
to like. In my case I'll take Madonna's "Ray Of Light,"
"Wide Open Spaces" by the "Dixie Chicks"
and Lauryn Hill's "Doo Woop (That Thing You Do)." I
can live without Madonna but I am thinking very hard about buying
"Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill." I might even buy the
"Dixie Chicks" CD later.
The rest of the music is arguably the best
of the year. I am warning you again that you might find one or
two of those particular songs that make you sick after listening
to them so often. Let's see, Brandy And Monica made it. So did
Celine Dion and that annoying Titanic song. And VH1's favorite
band, the "Goo Goo Dolls," are also nominated. There
are a few that I'm still undecided about, like Eagle-Eye Cherry's
"Save Tonight" and Natalie Imbruglia's "Torn."
Still, a collection of these songs has
its merits. It makes for an interesting snapshot of what music
was like in 1999. Somebody should put together a boxed set with
the whole decade. Also, a portion of the proceeds of the CD will
be donated to music education initiatives. |
