Bryan Kelley's fresh mix of folk and rock
makes his debut album "Charming the Gods" a winner.
He calls his style a mix of acoustic, alternative, and folk,
and somehow it all meshes together in a flattering way. Using
an eclectic mix of instruments, ranging from an acoustic guitar,
a fiddlebox and even a mandolin, Kelly's album is unique and
impressive.
Although the entire album is engaging,
the best songs on the album are the first three and his title
track, "Charming the Gods." The lyrics of the first
track, "Fear," are filled with the nervous apprehension
of an expectant father. The slow acoustic guitar follows Kelley's
fears as he waits for his child to be born. It's an intimate,
moving opening track.
The second song, "Angels," is
more fast-paced. It's an optimistic song about how children often
see things adults overlook. He croons lyrics like, "Don't
tell me I don't believe...that I don't believe in angels,"
and you fall into the easygoing rhythm of the folksy part of
the album.
"She Crawls" takes a turn from
pure folk to alternative rock --- the first one that exposes
Kelley's diverse sound --- but not the last. The rest of the
album Kelley and his band continue to intertwine folk and rock,
culminating in the title track, "Charming the Gods."
It's a haunting song about addiction and Kelley's voice is filled
with unmistakable raw emotion. "Charming the Gods"
truly sums up what Kelley is all about --- passionate music and
moving lyrics. |
