"Let's Ride" is
the latest release from R&B star, Montell Jordan.
Montel began his path to stardom back in 1995 with the hit single,
"This Is How We Do It." That song was a platinum plus
hit and the single sold 1.2 million copies earning him a place
in the music history books as the first Def Jam R&B artist
to hit #1 on the pop charts. That debut CD sold 1.3 million
copies.
The follow-up, "More...
," featured the single "I Like," a song that was
included on the soundtrack from the "Nutty Professor."
It also included the hits "What's On Tonight" and "Falling,"
which were both among Billboard's Top 100 R&B singles of
1997. Montell feels that "Let's Ride" is a distillation
of the first two albums. He's learning more with each new
release and just getting better and closer to the sound he wants
to create. "I think we had a lot of blues and jazz influence
on the first album, and the second album allowed me to control
myself vocally, the third album is me combining the first
and the second album together to show people that there are beautiful
things that still can be done with music, while at the same time
saying things that really affect people," says Montell.
It's one hell of a goal but
I think he's achieving that and more. The
single "Let's Ride" features rap artist "Master
P" on his first R&B
recording. The result is a song with quite an impact.
A smooth beat, a
great sound, and fantastic rhythm. This song is a definite hit,
and the buzz
is already out about the album.
The CD has a definite romantic
feel to it. Most of the songs are slow, sexy tunes, perfect
for a night with that special person in your life. There
is a variety of styles with Montell, blending funk, pop and even
gospel to
create each song, making it stand out and leave an impression
as you listen. "I want people to be able to party, to feel
romantic, to feel blissful...I want people to feel different
sides of music," Montell says. He's coming into his
own on this new album and delivering on his promise.
"When You Get Home Tonight"
is based on Marvin Gaye's 1976 hit, "I Want You," but
Montell adds a jazzy new bridge and chorus turning it into a
whole new sound altogether. They say that imitation is the sincerest
form of flattery and I think that if you improve upon the original
then you've also added something new for people to enjoy. A lot
of bands/singers do covers but if something entirely new is created,
then it's only that much better.
In "I Say Yes,"
Montell fronts a church choir and the result is a beautiful
gospel song that really reaches out to you. "Midnight
Rain Interlude" features background thunderstorm sounds,
with a rolling melody that is both sexy and relaxing.
I have to admit that this
is not my normal fare as far as music goes, but
I'm glad that I had the opportunity to sample from Montell's
repertoire.
This latest effort is a beautiful mixture of different sounds
and if it's
any indication of what's ahead for Montell, then we have a lot
to look
forward to. Montell states it best. "I try to put
the emotion and the power in the track and in the lyrics, so
that when you hear the record you feel emotionally charged.
It's the way of making records come alive, and that's what we
are trying to do on album number three. We set out to make
this record come alive." It looks like he's accomplished
that and more. With his attitude, things can only get better
and better. |
