So often in punk (or rock, or pop for that
matter) politics get in the way. The song stumbles and chokes
on its own "All Important Meaning." Trading the goal
of "Conveying the message" for creating good music,
the song falls flat and gets filed in the generic whiney rock
category.
But, every once in a while a band comes
along that understands the delicate balance between the raw power
of angst and subtle and intricate strength of musicianship. Enter
Sweden's "Refused." Following up their 1996 release,
"Songs To Fan The Flames Of Discontent," David Sandstrom,
Dennis Lyxzen, Krisofer Steen and Jon Brandstrom, carry the "Refused"
name with all the potency of an invasion with "The Shape
Of Punk To Come," their third full length release.
Veering slightly from their hardcore roots,
"Refused" incorporates some techno, industrial, and
in some spots even more melodic influences, adding a twist to
their drive it home philosophy. Tracks to check out include "Talk
About Money," "Hello Beautiful Stranger" and "You
Can Not Kill History." This record will prove to be a vital
piece in your punk collection. In other words, just go and buy
it you cheapie, OUI! |
