Adam Dorn, aka "Mocean Worker,"
has released his second full length, jazz inspired form of electronic
wizardry, bringing us blasts from the past via loops from the
large repository owned by his father Joel Dorn (who puts out
compilations of many past artists for the 32 Jazz label).
Unlike most electronica that depends for
a large part on the incessant 180 bps drums to provide the impetus
for whatever is the flavor of the moment, Adam delves into the
past to use material that gives its own impetus to the work,
and delivers unique and highly listenable music.
Opening with an eight minute piece entitled
"Rene M," it has a very noir sound to it, eerie and
darkly insistent. The mood stays tense with "Detonator"
as you wait for the music to explode --then it does!
Quirky, TV soundtrack sounding, "Jello
Dart" is Adam's tribute to his dad, based on an inside joke
about a call-in listener to his dad's radio show who called him
"Jello Dart." "Counts, Dukes & Strays,"
as you would imagine, refers to the various jazz greats with
those names, and is the most jazz-infused piece on the album.
The cuts continue in this same vein, esoteric, yet with an underlying
beat that keeps each piece coherent. This is a an excellent follow-
up to Adam's first album, "Home Movies From The Brain Forest."
You may not get up and dance, but your heart might pound a little
faster. |
