When I got my first glance at this CD I didn't know what to
expect. I'm not one to prejudge anything by it's title, however,
so I just put it on and pressed "play." I was then
treated to an album filled with wonderful lyrics and really upbeat,
fun music.
"Pee Shy" was formed back in late 1993 by writer/clarinetist/radio
host, Jenny Juristo, and Cindy Wheeler, poet and indie bookstore
owner in Tampa, FL. The group began as a duet, later adding bassist
Mary Guidera, and with this new album, drummer Bill Orrico. The
name is just what it sounds like. As Juristo describes it, "One
morning, Cindy just walked in and said 'Pee Shy,' and I said
'Yes!' We both get very embarrassed about peeing." Interesting
name, isn't it? They may be shy in that respect but the songs
they knock out are not shy in any way, shape, or form.
The title "Don't Get Too Comfortable" ". . .just
seemed to fit how we felt about everything, from music to men.
Right when you think everything's OK in a relationship, it's
not OK," Mary says. I just know that I really enjoyed listening
to this record. There wasn't a song on it that I didn't like
either musically or lyrically. The music is just so tight-sounding
and interesting. The lyrics are some of the most thought and
image provoking I've heard in a long time.
One of my favorite songs on the CD is "Mr. Whisper."
It's just such an appealing song. It has bouncy, light music
and they use a toy piano which adds a playful aspect to the song.
The lyrics really fascinated me in this song. "I saw your
face in a dream/ You were wearing a mask just like a thief/ Committing
armed robbery/ You were holding up the bank of me/ Nothing larger
than twenties please/ You were holding up the bank of me . .
." What a fabulous image! This was the first song on the
CD and I was already looking forward to what was coming next.
I was not a bit disappointed.
I don't want to keep quoting lyrics, you just really need to
hear the whole record. The melodies are absolutely wonderful.
Juristo and Wheeler have combined their talents and they complement
each other beautifully. "We're like oil and vinegar,"
says Juristo. "You can taste the difference, but you want
us together." I really can't recommend this CD enough. I'm
already looking forward to the next release from "Pee Shy." |
