"Keeping Out Of Direct Sunlight,"
the introduction that signals the beginning of this 14 song palpitation
from one of the current leaders of the true punk/hard-core generation,
speaks for being "protected," though it's hard to imagine
there being any suitable isolation to the oncoming combustion
that's about to begin seconds later.
"Shut Your Mouth And Open Your Eyes"
is representative of feelings of betrayal, inequity and defiance
as it would seem, many of the words strewn among titles like
"pH Low," "Lower Your Head And Take It In The
Body" and "Coin Return" just to name a few, but
we could go on. Perseverance triumphing over shame is the general
significance that sets the foundation for many of yesterday's
and today's emerging punk artists. Here it's no less relevant
as where opening your eyes becomes critical if the purpose should
ever be served.
"AFI" write from a direction
that implies serious overtones, streaking across a sunless sky,
obliterating a guitar hook with the best of 'em, as if the way
to get the most of their instruments is to abuse their uses until,
by the last song, they're all crippled, broken and ready to be
set ablaze. Here WE are, eleven songs in, with "Salt For
Your Wounds," which, by this time, would almost be a welcome
relief considering the anxiety that's being inflicted by this
sudden and unaccountable rage they bring, but I swear they haven't
let up for a minute! |
