This is supposed to be a "progression"
from their previous release in '96, "None So Vile?"
Well, if I understand the term correctly, then I'd hate like
hell to hear what that release must have sounded like, because
my ears are still barely recovering from having just listened
to the new one.
With "Whisper Supremacy," Canada's
"Cryptopsy" have taken death metal to its most extreme
form (and how's this for an acronym-"reinstated all hope
that there is still life
in its realm"), but most
assuredly, death does not get more brutal than this folks!
This latest release features eight tracks
of total musical molestation, with no room for subtlety in any
way shape or form, and there's none to be found, not even in
favor of slow intros that sometimes accompany the songs from
other death bands. The only place where I found the slightest
deviation to this point, is when I embarked on song number seven,
"Faceless Unknown," which has a brief hallucinogenic-type
break, for all of about ten seconds before returning to the familiar
butchering.
The playing is fast and furious, and the
advanced time changes are enough to melt anyone's inner circuitry,
but the sheer intensity "Cryptopsy" produces is unmatched.
With barely enough time to catch your own breath between songs,
they go on and on speeding recklessly toward oblivion while we're
just sitting there with our mouths open wondering how they can
keep it up. Through it all, there are few distinguishing factors
that'll cue you as to what played where, and which was which,
but damned if they don't stick to their formula of consistency
in making this one of the most powerful exhibitions to hit the
scene from day one.
Having already developed a sincere cult
following (and the word "sincere" cannot be overstated
in this case) since they began in the early 90's, "Cryptopsy's"
recent signing to Century Media's already impressive roster of
extreme artists should allow the band to branch out much further
in their quest for global damnation
or domination!
Quite a hit at the last couple of Milwaukee
Metalfest rave stages, and currently a force with the "Death
Across America Tour," which features the likes of Gorguts
and Nile, the timing appears right for "Cryptopsy"
to move to the surface. "For they shall soon rise slowly
above the dark catacombs whence they came, to unleash their message
of evil and destruction upon the unsuspecting outer-world
